Accommodation

Guest Accommodation
The twelve charming stand alone suites have a contemporary bungalow feel with a cheeky 50’s ambience, with contrasting hues of copper and pale turquoise. The spacious suites comprise two inter-linked buildings. A covered inter-leading link takes guests to generously proportioned bathrooms with twin hand basins, separate w.c, and indoor and outdoor showers. Stairs lead guests up to a machan (a covered rooftop platform) which is perfect for romantic sleepouts, complete with mosquito net, overhead fan and hookah pipes.

Guest Areas
The spacious guest areas are elegantly finished with delicate handmade Parsi tiles, woven hyacinth furniture, and giant ebony chests. Cool, airy and comfortable, they boast high ceilings and deep welcoming sofas. Large shaded decks lead guests down from the sitting room to the nullah. Baghvan’s interactive kitchen spills out into the dining area where guests are encouraged to learn how to prepare traditional Indian dishes – recipes and spices provided! Guests can browse peacefully in the Safari Shop, idle away the hours in the library, or cool off in the swimming pool which contours along the nullah. Guests arriving early or departing late can freshen up in the Goings & Comings room.

A Day At Baghvan

Upon arrival in India’s capital city, Delhi, you will take a short flight to Nagpur, where you will be warmly welcomed by your chauffeur and whisked away on an air conditioned journey by road to Baghvan in Pench National Park.

The Baghvan team will greet you at the Lodge entrance with a refreshing glass of ginger and lime water. A butler will then escort you to your bungalow suite, located on a lovely nullah (dry riverbed) surrounded by forest. Tempting lunch platters, beautifully arranged on the veranda or by the poolside, entice the taste buds. If you prefer to eat in the privacy of your own bungalow, platters will be discreetly delivered. Spend the early afternoon indulging in an in-room Ayurvedic massage, try out the ‘Yoga in a Basket’ provided in each bungalow, or amble down to the pool and relax in the sunshine. Or the energetic might enjoy a scenic bicycle ride to the nearby village market.

Afternoon high tea will be served in the interactive kitchen, where guests are encouraged to learn how to prepare traditional Indian dishes – recipes and spices provided! You will be introduced to your expert &Beyond trained naturalist, who will give you a full orientation of what to expect on your safari drives into the jungle. You will then depart on your afternoon drive in an open 4x4 safari vehicle through Pench’s dry deciduous forest of predominantly teak trees and meandering jungle streams. Witness the region’s rich wildlife, including tiger, leopard, wild dog, gaur, sambar, chital and brilliant birdlife (including Baghvan’s ten Star Birds). Stop to take in the Indian sunset with a mouthwatering sundowner – perhaps some Indian beer or a glass of chilled wine.

As you arrive back at the Lodge after sunset, ice-cold signature cocktails are savoured on the guest veranda. Dinners are a true highlight, with an abundance of flavours and textures on offer. Delectable dinner platters are served in a variety of surprise locations: among the chefs in the interactive kitchen, on the spacious veranda overlooking the nullah, by the poolside, or perhaps you will join other guests for an enchanting jungle banquet. Treat your palate to an array of Indian dishes, from stuffed lamb and marinated chicken in sealed banana leaves, to roasted vegetables and chicken tikka, all served with an assortment of fresh naan breads, homemade pickles and mint chutneys. After dinner, indulge in decadent desserts, served with tea, coffee or cognac. You will then be escorted back to your bungalow for a peaceful night’s sleep. Listen to the sounds of the jungle as you safely fall asleep in your romantic sleepout on your machan (covered jungle rooftop platform complete with sweeping mosquito nets). Or snuggle into your enormous double bed if you prefer!

The next morning, your personal wake-up call will include the delivery of freshly squeezed orange juice, tea, coffee and homemade biscuits, for you to enjoy peacefully in your bungalow prior to departing on your morning jungle safari. After a morning filled with adventure – which could include viewing tigers from atop an elephant – you will return to the Lodge for a hearty breakfast. Delectable breakfast platters are served on the veranda. Enjoy freshly squeezed fruit and/or vegetable juice, or get hooked on the traditional Indian lassis! The various platters are laden with toast, jams and marmalades, chutneys, homemade muesli, fresh fruits, and assorted cheeses. Hot breakfasts are also prepared according to guest’s preferences, with eggs and fresh breads. Or sample some traditional Indian fare: parathas (homemade salted pancakes with potatoes, paneer and cauliflower), poha (flat saffron rice with fresh vegetables), kathi rolls (Indian style wraps stuffed with chicken, lamb or vegetables) or pao bhaji (fresh bread rolls served with tomato and onion).

We hope you will leave Baghvan, well rested and already planning your return visit!

Food at Baghvan

Food is an integral part of Indian culture, with each region and religion lending its own unique influences. At Baghvan, guests delight in the delicious flavours of Central India. Different dishes are introduced at each meal, offering a range of mouthwatering dining experiences.

As guests arrive at Baghvan, they are welcomed with a refreshing ice-cold sweet and salty lime soda. Light, healthy lunches are served on a sweeping shaded deck surrounding the swimming pool and overlooking the nullah (dry riverbed), a favoured route of the Pench tigers. Alternately, lunch platters are delivered to the suite should guests opt for a leisurely meal in the privacy of their own bungalow. Lunches include a choice of flavoursome local dishes, from chicken with onion and tomato, to potato cooked every which way. Enjoy stuffed rotis and steamed rice, followed by fresh fruit with syrup.

Before guests venture off on their afternoon game drive, afternoon tea is served. Sip on masala spiced iced coffee or tea, with biscuits freshly baked in the interactive kitchen, and be sure to try the assorted fruit with rock salt, chaat masala and lime. After an exciting drive in the jungle, guests return to the lodge and whet their appetites with Baghvan’s signature pre-dinner cocktail. Celebrate the sunset under a huge Banyan tree whilst watching a giant flying squirrel perform breathtaking aerobatics.

Dinners are a true highlight, with an abundance of flavours and textures on offer. Snack on a light salad with pappadums and limes. Then delve into the traditional main dishes, including lentil soup, soft vegetables with peppers, chickpeas with tea leaves, paneer in mint and coriander, tandoori, roasted brinjal with green chili, red chilis stuffed with achar masala in jaggery curry, chicken korma – all served with an assortment of naan breads and fresh chutneys. Guests are invited to mingle with our expert Indian chefs in Baghvan’s interactive kitchen and learn how to prepare traditional dishes – recipes and spices provided! After dinner, guests indulge in decadent desserts or cheese platters, served with tea, coffee or cognac.

Each morning, personal wake-up calls include the delivery of basil-infused water to the suite. It is left quietly in the courtyard for the guests to enjoy along with tea, coffee and a morning snack, prior to departing on their safari. After a morning filled with adventures, guests return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast. Delectable breakfast platters are served on the veranda or in the lush vegetable garden in the morning sun.

Sharing good food and stories is a revered tradition at Baghvan.
